Review

Thought to be one of the few films to capture the essence of Anton Chekov, this much admired romantic yet bittersweet love story is set in turn-of-the-century Russia. While vacationing at a resort in Yalta, a married, middle-aged banker meets a beautiful but sad young woman who, having left her husband behind in the city, has come on holiday accompanied only by her little dog. Attracted to one another, they begin an affair and eventually fall in love. Resolving to continue their affair after the holiday, they meet for years clandestinely in Moscow, but knowing full well that their love and relationship is doomed. (Russian with English subtitles)
