Skinopsis

Sarah Michelle Gellar makes the mistake of living in a house that is haunted by vengeful spirits. She searches for answers as the body count rises, but there seems to be no satisfying their curse. Also check out the original Japanese version, Ju-On, from the same director.

Review

This, the fifth film in the Ju-On: The Grudge series helmed by Shimizu, is yet another effective chiller in the director's canon. In this installment, Gellar is the young woman who makes the unwitting but deadly mistake of setting foot in that damned haunted house. Shimizu wisely keeps the Tokyo setting of the previous films, and while The Grudge is slightly Americanized, it still retains the deliberate pace and creepy atmosphere of the previous entries. Fans of the series should have fun picking out setpieces that have been lifted from all four earlier films, as well as some new ones -- almost all of which are still scary. The sequence involving Strickland is particularly terrifying, and the climax, which is a subtle mind-bender, bringing Gellar and Pullman together, is rather unsettling. Also noteworthy is Ishibashi (of Audition fame), who brings a welcome gravity to the film as the detective investigating the murders. Don't listen to the many critics who poo-pooed the film upon its theatrical release for not making enough sense; this is good, scary fun that explains just enough so as not to be confusing, leaving some things to the viewer's imagination.
