A troubled man ventures into the poorest slums of Rio de Janeiro in search of personal closure in this vividly portrayed, metaphysical tale from seasoned filmmaker Carlos Diegues. Antonio (Jose Wilker) is a 55-year-old Brazilian expatriate — long a professor of astrophysics at a university in the U.S. — who returns to accept a prestigious award from the government and uncover why his mother abandoned him at birth. Now stricken with cancer but still holding onto a lifetime of inner pain, his odyssey takes him into the unpaved, trash-strewn canals of the Rio slums. There he meets his elderly adopted father and is befriended by Mosca (Sergio Malheiros), a drug-dealing street kid, and the beautiful Luciana (Tais Araujo). He also encounters Zeze (Lea Garcia), a compassionate black woman, who may hold the secrets of his mother’s past. With breathtaking cinematography and a classic theme of searching for one’s past and finding closure, The Greatest Love of All is a moving, mesmerizing drama. (Portuguese with English subtitles)
