Though not the first, nor last, film of TV-to-big screen adaptations, The Fugitive is certainly the final word. Ford takes over the part once immortalized by David Janssen in the classic 1960s TV show: Dr. Richard Kimble, a successful surgeon falsely convicted of murdering his wife. En route to prison, Kimble escapes, setting into motion a massive manhunt led by the relentless Det. Gerard (marvelously played by Oscar winner Jones). As Kimble searches for the infamous one-armed man who actually committed the murder, Gerard combs the countryside in an epic quest. Rather than simply rehash the original series, director Davis and his writers have updated and re-energized a quintessential TV drama with remarkable success. A breathtaking adventure and a fascinating detective story told at breakneck speed, The Fugitive also features some of the best chase sequences in recent memory.
