Review

The Deep South has played host to many a curious tale, but none more bewildering than this wildly uneven but nevertheless hypnotic adaptation of the Edward Albee play, itself based on the Carson McCullers novella. Redgrave gives a bold, mesmerizing performance as Miss Amelia, the masculine town tycoon whose crew-cut and gangly walk send fear into the local residents. All except Lymon (Hubbard), a hunchback dwarf who arrives one day claiming to be her cousin. Lymon convinces her to open a cafe, which becomes the pulse of the tiny town. However, things change drastically when Miss Amelia's estranged husband, Marvin (Carradine), returns from prison. The stage is set for a battle-of-the-sexes showdown which culminates in an unbelieveable fist-fight finale. Not for all tastes, but for the more adventurous viewer.
