From the liner notes

During the late 16th century the Cossacks of Eastern Europe join the Poles to rid the Turks from the Steps of Europe and in return for their help, the Poles agree to give the Steps the the Cossacks. However, after they win the battle, the Poles back out of their agreement and force the Cossacks into the hills. Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner), a Cossack Colonel, settles into a comfortable farm life and raises his son Andrei (Tony Curtis) to learn the ways of the Poles, hoping he would one day defeat them in battle. Insteasd, Andrei falls in love with the daughter of a Polish nobleman, setting the stage for a clash between love and family honor.
