Review

A new crew takes control of the Starship Enterprise's theatrical adventures, and as James T. Kirk passes the captain's chair to Jean-Luc Picard, Generations brings both men together in an enjoyably familiar sci-fi tale. Whereas the first six Trek films echoed the rhythms and themes of the 1960s TV series, Generations is very much a by-product of the popular syndicated show. The story begins with the mysterious death of Kirk, and then skips ahead three-quarters of a century where Picard and his able crew answer an SOS, rescuing, among others, loony scientist Malcolm McDowell, who spells trouble for all. As would be expected, the plot consists of lots of techno-babble, alternate universes and devious Klingons. The entire crew of "T.N.G." is on hand, though Data (Brent Spiner) gets the best share of both screen time and the laughs as he finally acquires long-elusive human emotions. Patrick Stewart is ever-commanding as Picard, William Shatner is at his best as Kirk, and there's a show-stopping crash scene worth seeing twice.
