Review

In the opening moments of the gleefully irreverent Shrek, a calm-voiced narrator reads a story from an engraved children's book. Seconds later, a page is torn and used as a paper substitute for a certain outhouse activity. This ain't your mother's animated fairy tale. Bordering on the naughty that children will no doubt love, this wildly funny tale based on William Steig's book has as its hero an irascible ogre named Shrek (Myers) who teams with a chatty talking donkey (a hilarious Murphy) to search for a princess (Diaz) imprisoned in a forbidding castle. Lovestruck dragons, magic spells and some twisted jokes (a frog blown up into a balloon!) await these mismatched adventurers. Shrek is a marvelous, one-of-a-kind children's classic thanks to some impressive animation, a slaphappy screenplay full of wonderful laughs (including a few well-placed pop-culture references), and three most delightful lead characters.
