While Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) lives in safely guarded seclusion, bodies begin dropping around the Hollywood set of Stab 3, the latest movie based on the gruesome Woodsboro killings. The escalating terror finally brings Sidney out of hiding, drawing her and the other survivors once again into an insidious game of horror movie mayhem.

Review

This could be dubbed Return of the Law of Diminishing Returns. After the great fun of the first film, and the surprisingly interesting Scream 2, it appears the gang has just run out of ideas and is cashing in. Still, there are elements here that work. Sidney, now a recluse living under a pseudonym, works as a phone counselor, while Stab 3, the newest installment of the film–within–a–film series (which looks like more fun than Scream 3 turns out to be!) is being shot in Hollywood. Cox, having a wretched hair day, has fun battling with Posey, the actress playing Cox in Stab 3, and Henriksen has his moments as a sleazy producer. The opening is quite good, and there's an amusing chase through a soundstage mockup of Sidney's original house, but Wes Craven's bored direction and a shockingly unshocking climax are more indicative of the desperation of this enterprise.
