Review

Slick and sleazy at the same time, Rounders is a testosterone-heavy variation on classic gambling movies The Cincinnati Kid and The Hustler. Fresh-faced, poker-playing law student Damon comes to the rescue when pal Norton gets out of the slammer carrying heavy debts from seedy underworld types. But Norton keeps playing, too, and losing; leading Damon to a showdown with the hammy Malkovich, playing an Oreo-chomping Russian hood. While the story meanders all over the place, and the dialogue is filled with sometimes impossible-to-follow gambling terms, director Dahl finds fascination with his gallery of idiosyncratic characters. Damon, however, is too bland as the lead. Ultimately, the jokers may be wild here, but the main characters aren’t wild enough.
