A big-hearted and entertaining retelling of the Robin Hood legend with a whole new story to convey. Costner is the new Robin, and though he lacks the accent and sophistication we have all come to expect of the Bandit of Sherwood Forest, he nevertheless gives a believable portrait of the idealistic folk hero. The story pits Robin against the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, who attempts to seize control of the throne of England in King Richard's absence. Rickman gives a hysterical, over-the-top portrayal of the Sheriff -- he takes a role which Basil Rathbone had owned for nearly six decades and creates an equally memorable, singular villain.
