Profane is a moody and darkly humorous feature length motion picture about a young Muslim Pro Domme in the midst of a spiritual crisis. It’s explores the idea of submission from a religious, psychological and sexual perspective. It’s also a horror film about possession by a jinn. Jinn are the Islamic equivalent of demons. According to the Quran, Allah (God) created humans from clay, angels from light and jinn from smokeless fire. They are equally good and evil, and it is said that each of us has one of our own. Profane is an inverted exorcism. The main character, Muna, has lost her jinn and is trying to bring it back into herself in order to feel whole again. She also struggles to understand the culture and religion from which she has been alienated. In the meantime, she journeys through a maze of indulgence, excess, and altered reality to find that her true self has been whispering to her all along.

They say it's hard out there for a pimp... well, it's hard out there for a hooker too... especially when that hooker is young, Muslim and going through an identity crisis. Muna (Manal Kara) is just such a hooker. She spends her days getting fucked up, dominating submissive men for cash, showing off her naked flesh and, y'know, trying to get back in touch with her religious roots. Sister, you've got a long road ahead of you.

Up and coming filmmaker Usama Alshaibi crafts a bold, experimental feature that is alternately sexy, hilarious and hinting at some sort of transcendence. Both Kara and her junkie sex worker cohort Molly Plunk show off incredible amounts of their naked flesh while Alshaibi focuses on experimental editing to hint at bigger meaning. Fans of experimental imagery and editing are in for a treat with the many rhythms and patterns he is able to capture with his camera. Those looking for more straightforward narrative filmmaking will most likely find themselves turned off. Alshaibi is also able to mine comedic moments from Muna's existensial crisis. In particular, the scene in which Muna and her friend are visited by a devout young cab driver they've befriended who brings along his imam friend. While Muna makes a half-assed attempt to cover up the plethora of debaucherous evidence around her apartment, neither she not Plunk bother to put clothes on... or clean up the cocaine on their coffee table. Naturally, the scene gets more than a little awkwardly hilarious.

It will certainly take a more adventurous cinematic palette to enjoy Profane. The extensive sexual content placed next to religious imagery probably won't sit right with more conservative viewers and the experimental structure and editing require some kind of appreciation of avant-garde video art techniques. That Alshaibi uses those techniques in a most beautiful way will delight viewers who've grown weary of lesser filmmakers butchering those techniques. Pervs like us will, naturally, have much to spring wood over.
