Playing God, a big-screen vehicle for TV star Duchovny, is in desperate need of repair. He plays a former doctor who lost his license when he lost a patient while doped up. Acquiring his stash one night, Duchovny saves the life of a shooting victim who turns out to be a henchman of local crime boss Hutton. Impressed with his currently unused talents, Hutton hires Duchovny as his gang's full-time doc. This premise could have made an interesting thriller, but the plot just drunkedly stumbles along, piling up clichés (soft-boiled, monotonous voice-overs; technoesque soundtrack; pointlessly artsy cinematography) while its story line rambles on creating a level of viewer ennui from which one cannot recover. Duchovny has no screen charisma (he seems all-too-aware of the garbage he's starring in), and Hutton is about as menacing as a squirt gun.
