Mitchum is memorable as a retired private eye, living as a gas station owner, who is lured back to his old job by gangster Douglas (wonderfully greasy) to find his dame who ran off with his heart as well as his money. Our fated hero's sleuthing leads him to Mexico where he not only finds his prey (Greer, cunningly seductive as the femme fatale), but falls in love with her as well. A riveting drama of double dealings, amour mort and pervasive corruption. A '40s film noir classic. (Remade in 1984 as Against All Odds.)
