Leaping back into action, gun–slinging, guitar–toting hero "El Mariachi" is back in town in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, as director Robert Rodriguez delivers the epic final chapter of his pulp Western trilogy.

Review

The prolific and talented Robert Rodriguez completes his El Mariachi trilogy with this surprisingly cold, hugely uneven pseudo–epic. Antonio Banderas is back, this time known simply as "El", and he's been recruited by a renegade CIA agent (Johnny Depp) to assassinate the (supposedly corrupt) President of Mexico. El has his own mission as well: to avenge the death of his wife and child. Good premise for an action–packed film; but, for better and worse, Rodriguez feels the need to add several more subplots and a host of other characters. This reduces El to a secondary lead in his own sequel, which, since that leaves the always–inventive Depp as the main attraction, isn't such a terrible thing. It also leaves room for great turns by Blades and Rourke, and some terrific little asides. The action runs the gamut from routine to rousing, but there's so much of it, that it's hard to complain. Mexico never quite comes together—and it has a real nasty streak that at times is off–putting—but its considerable qualities almost outweigh its missteps.
