If you look up the term "independent romantic comedy" in the dictionary, you may find the description for this lively number that caused a stir at Sundance when Miramax ponied up $6 million for distribution rights. Indy doyenne Davis plays a night nurse at a Boston hospital who tries to make the best of a bad situation when her live-in lover Hoffman decides to dump her. Yenta mother Taylor decides to help by placing a personal ad, and soon a host of loser bachelors are coming out of the woodworks. Not one of them is Gelfant, a hard-working plumber who's studying to be a marine biologist. We know that he and she are destined for each other, but fate keeps them apart. Writer-director Anderson peppers his film with nice location work, a moody bossa-nova soundtrack and engagingly quirky characters. While Gelfant is downright likable, it's Davis who holds this Beantown chowder together. She's luminous as the complex young woman whose inner-spirit defies the depressing '90s single scene around her.
