Skinopsis

Nicholas Cage stars as an adventurer, searching for a fabled ancient treasure in which clues are on the dollar bill as to its location, must first steal the Declaration of Independence as the last piece of the puzzle as to the treasure's whereabouts.

Review

Ever wonder what that broken pyramid means on the back of the dollar bill? Well, that and other answers to life's never-ending mysteries are on-hand in the slick and resourceful National Treasure, a formulaic Jerry Bruckheimer adventure that doesn't make all that much sense and borrows heavily from other, better films but still manages in spite of itself to be an entertaining popcorn movie. Don't look for logic or common sense, for it's not here. Coincidence and easy answers are the order of the day. Cage stars as Ben Gates, whose family has toiled since the Revolutionary War searching for a fabled "treasure of treasures." Clues abound: on paper currency, on sunken ships -- and now he's just discovered -- the Declaration of Independence. All's Ben has to do is steal it -- to stop a rival also looking for the treasure -- and piece together the intricate puzzle. He gets some help from a pretty National Archives conservator (Kruger), and. with his trusty sidekick (an amiable Bartha), they all go treasure hunting. For a film that runs 135 minutes, the pace is suprisingly swift, and the plot may remind many of "The DaVinci Code," though this script was supposedly written before that book's release. Whether a ripoff of the book or not, National Treasure wears its imitation with pride. The cast is game for almost anything, no matter how hammy the situation, clichéd the line, or impossible the task, they make it all bearable. Pass the popcorn.
