Skinopsis

Lesbian vampires run amuk (kind of) in the dark streets of New York City in this artsy, independently made production. While on a search for her long lost brother, the vampire Nadja bids her time nibbling the neck and kissing the lips of another woman. Against her expectation, she falls in love with her but forces beyond their control (including a campy Peter Fonda as a vampire killer) conspire to separate them.

Review

This bloodless, art-house vampire film aspires to be innovative in both its narrative and its cinematography, but is not completely successful in either respect. Nadja (the cadaverous Löwensohn), a Romanian vampire transplanted to New York City, lives a life of coffeehouse ennui and predatory hunting. She begins a lesbian relationship with a similarly disaffected twentysomething burnout married to a likable but dimwitted amateur boxer, who just happens to be the nephew of the vampire-hunter who slew Nadja's father! As if this weren't needlessly convoluted enough, Nadja has a twin brother, who is in the loving care of a nurse who is the boxer's sister! The film's tone veers wildly from angst-ridden to campy humor, and attempts to create a sort of "vampire-vision" through the use of a Fisher Price PixelCam, which fragments the picture. Though the production design is very good, Nadja ultimately is too pretentious for its own good.
