In Independence Day, Smith gallantly saves Earth from hordes of invading aliens. Nothing he did in ID4, however, could have prepared Smith for the sheer fun and exhilaration awaiting him, Jones and especially the viewer in this uproariously entertaining sci-fi comedy. Smith and Jones play government agents whose task it is is to monitor illegal aliens -- as in the extra-terrestrial kind. When a nasty alien assassin (a giant bug who literally takes the form of D'Onofrio) arrives to murder an alien dignitary living incognito in New York, our men in black hunt him down like the pesky cockroach he is. Sonnenfeld crams lots of humor, excitement and terrific effects into the film's efficiently brisk 95-minute running time. MIB is funny, hip and a technical wonder. It also nicely explains how and why certain celebrities in our culture achieved their success. That's the real scary part. (Sequel: Men in Black II)
