In his first post-Mia production, Allen reteams with his old partner Keaton to bring about this engaging and genuinely funny whodunit in the tradition of The Thin Man. Allen and Keaton play a calcified middle-aged couple who befriend the seemingly blissful older couple down the hall. But when the wife suddenly drops dead of a heart attack, Keaton suspects her husband of murder and takes it on herself to uncover the truth, setting off a hilarious and, at times, tense mystery. Alda costars as a friend who plays along with Keaton's theory while Allen thinks she's just deranged. Throughout, Allen serves up his usual repertoire of quips and one-liners and they consistently amuse. Manhattan is an enjoyable affair that does Nick and Nora Charles proud, albeit without the 15 martinis per scene.
