Pfeiffer's sincere performance more than redeems the few plot holes in this otherwise endearing drama. She plays Lurene, a Dallas housewife who, upon the assassination of JFK, buses to Washington for his funeral. Enroute, she inadvertently involves a fellow passenger, a black man (Haysbert), with the police. Traveling with his young daughter, the father and child hit the back roads to elude the authorities, accompanied by the naïve, good-intentioned Lurene. What follows is a charming road movie with touches of whimsy, romance and history lessons on racial attitudes, 1960s-style. Haysbert and young McFadden, as his daughter, give especially pleasing performances. But this is Pfeiffer's film. Her strength is her honest emotion, and the film is more lovely for it.
