Besson makes an impressive directorial debut with this offbeat, black-and-white sci-fi adventure set in a post-nuclear world where the few surviving men battle each other over territory and the last remaining women on Earth. Though Besson's film, which has no dialogue, follows the conventions of the post-apocalyptic genre, his visuals are striking and he creates a disturbing sense of atmosphere.
