Schwarzenegger finally bombed with this disappointing action-parody, sort of a Purple Rose of Cairo meets Lethal Weapon. A 12-year-old kid is magically transported by a magical movie ticket into the celluloid world of his favorite film hero, Jack Slater. The trouble really starts, however, when they both emerge in the real world on this side of the screen. The film is an endless barrage of gags referring to the insipidness of many Hollywood actioners: hundreds of smashing cars; tons of insufficient backup officers; Arnold Schwarzenegger; African-American police captains; and any other readily available cliché of cop-action flicks. Suffering from lackluster direction, Last Action Hero is a good joke with a really awful punchline.
