An interesting investigation of gender politics as well as modern notions of art, beauty and truth, Rohmer's "fable," the fourth in a series of six, offers an unusual parable for those unschooled in the complex games of sexual pairing. The story revolves around Adrian, a self-important would-be gallery owner, his painter friend Daniel and a Lolita-esque nymphette (Politoff). Adrian attempts to protect his solitude after he finds himself sharing a villa with the others on the Riviera. Though he first resists her, Adrian later becomes obsessed with the young girl's charms. The story unfolds through Adrian's voice-over with a minimal and beautiful use of visual explication. Though the narrative is at times overbearing and didactic, the film maintains an even pace, thorough characterization and a solid story. (French with English subtitles)
