Based on the popular British comic book series, Judge Dredd is a visually stunning though empty-headed visceral ride into a bleak future. Stallone finds himself in similar territory as his entertaining Demolition Man as a good guy who's framed and must battle a wicked villain in a futuristic society. Whereas Man was lots of fun thanks to Wesley Snipes' scene-stealing and a good amount of comedy, this trek is a muddled array of action scenes, posturing (by Stallone), lethargic pacing and humorless bits. The production design is terrific, however. Stallone is nothing more than a parody of himself, and von Sydow is on hand to try to lend a bit of dignity. Schneider's comic relief -- while funny at first -- becomes tiresome.
