Roald Dahl's charming children's story makes for an equally charming animated tale, though not quite as inventive as director Selick's debut feature The Nightmare Before Christmas. When young James loses his parents, he is forced to live with his two oppressive aunts (Lumley, Margolyes camping it up). That is until a giant peach miraculously appears in their garden, offering James flight across the ocean. Using the same stop-motion animation as in Nightmare, Selick and his staff are able to incorporate live-action material, as well, to good effect. Hindered only by an unmemorable score, James and the Giant Peach is an affectionate fantasy which is capable of winning the hearts of children and parents alike.
