Review

An American version of the 1977 German film, this earnest, well-acted, downbeat remake will draw comparisons to Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful (though made two years before it). Both examine the Holocaust with an eye towards humor, though Jakob isn't as accomplished as Benigni's masterwork. In the Lodz ghetto during the Nazi Occupation, a widowed ex-café owner (Williams), Jakob, hears on German radio a report of an Allied victory against the Nazis. Telling his neighbors the news, they all assume he has a radio (which is outlawed). In order to give some hope to those around him, he continues the deception -- to the point that he puts his own life in jeopardy. The story is moving without being too heavy-handed about the characters' situation, and a subdued Williams and a good ensemble are sincere and effective.
