Review

One of the few instances in which a remake does justice to the original. In this updated and refurbished sci–fi tale, director Philip Kaufman creates an unusually effective sense of dread to chillingly tell the story of pod people taking over the bodies of the citizens of San Francisco. Gutwrenching tension and good performances, especially from Jeff Goldblum and the marvelous Veronica Cartwright, heighten the enjoyment of this genre masterwork. Just try to forget that haunting (and unsettling) ending. And, yes, that is Kevin McCarthy (from the 1956 original) in the beginning.
