An impassioned scream for justice which dramatizes the real-life plight of Gerry Conlon and his companions, a group of innocents known as the Guilford Four who spent 15 years in a British prison for an IRA bombing. Day-Lewis easily could have won his second Oscar for his fiery portrayal of the emotional Conlon, a petty thief and troublemaker from Belfast who, by sheer coincidence, was caught in the British government's legal net -- which also picked up several members of his family and his friends including his father and aunt. And while Day-Lewis' performance sparkles, it is Postlethwaithe, in a riveting performance as his steadfastly principled father Giuseppe, who truly carries the film's moral message. Thompson costars as a dedicated lawyer who finally uncovers the truth and helps free them.
