Disney updates another one of its comedies, this time the popular 1961 film The Absent Minded Professor. Like the original, it's about a scientist who invents flubber -- flying rubber. Taking over the Fred MacMurray role with considerable comedic splash is Williams, who is able to somewhat control his manic personality. Unfortunately, the writers haven't given him too much to do, and ultimately Flubber is no more than an occasionally amusing family comedy which lets down throughout. Unlike the original, the flubber has been given human characteristics, and that's kinda cute. So is the flying robot companion of Williams. But there's not enough whimsical comedy and slapstick, and a subplot involving two thugs is silly. But Williams is always entertaining, even though you know he and the film are capable of more.
