Admittedly, the thought of Williams and Crystal costarring in their first film together would seem almost heaven-sent. No other contemporary comics can equal their collective gift for delivery, ad-libbing, character and timing. Expectations aside, however, their first joint venture is only occasionally funny, and director Reitman doesn't give his stars ample room in which to explore the comic possibilities of the scenario. Based on the French comedy Les Comperes, the story begins when former lover Kinski tells both Williams and Crystal that her missing son is his. They eventually unite to locate the teenager, and their incompatability sets the stage for a few laughs. The two stars -- as would be expected -- have a great rapport. But the screenplay just isn't consistently funny. Instead of nonstop hilarity, we get two incredibly gifted but underused leads.
