Review

In this over-the-edge, misanthropic black comedy, Douglas plays a slightly psychotic, unemployed defense worker whose pent up hostilities against what he perceives as an increasingly foreign society explode in the sweltering heat and insufferable traffic jams of Los Angeles. At times wildly entertaining, at others shockingly violent and disturbing, the film follows Douglas as he abandons his car on the freeway and treks across L.A. towards the home of his estranged wife (Hershey). Along the way, he unleashes his fury on Latinos, Asians, neo-Nazis and other "bogeymen" standing between him and the American dream. Duvall injects a voice of reason in the film as a hen-pecked cop who must come to grips with his own sense of inadequacy before confronting Douglas. A reactionary though simple message of white fear in an increasingly non-white society.
