A companion piece to his terrific Chungking Express, director Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels is a similarly atmospheric, stunningly visual treat. Two tenuously related story lines are interwoven here: a young hit man considers a career change, and a slacker who lives with his pop earns a living by breaking into shops after hours and selling the goods. As with Chungking, the stories in Angels aren't as important as the characters and the details of their day-to-day lives, their feelings, outlooks and relationships. Kar-Wai's restless camerawork and editing, multiple film stocks, ultra-cool soundtrack and stylized -- though brief -- gunfights signal the emergence of a hip, very talented craftsman and artist; it's his humanism and warmth that really stands out and sets him apart. Languid, moody and moving, Fallen Angels is truly memorable. (Cantonese with English subtitles)
