Review

Both a remake and a sequel to his 1981 cult classic Escape from New York, Carpenter's Escape from L.A. marks the return of the world's most unlikely one-eyed hero, Snake Plissken (Russell). This time, he must enter the island of Los Angeles, now serving as a spot of exile for those deemed undesirable to the fascist regime ruling what remains of the United States. There he has to retrieve both a lethal satellite control mechanism and the president's loony daughter, in that order. Unfortunately, the movie itself does not live up to this grand premise. Fans of the first film may be entertained as Carpenter and Russell cover much of the same ground, but overall the lackluster computer effects, forced humor and sense of "we've seen all this before" work too much against it.
