If The Hunt for Red October brought an end to the Cold War at a theatre near you, then another submarine thriller, Crimson Tide, certainly tries to rekindle the sleepy politics of paranoia. And it does so in an exceedingly efficient manner. Washington stars as the newly appointed second-in-command of the nuclear submarine USS Alabama. He and the crew serve under the watchful eye of hard-nosed captain Hackman (giving one of his patented blustery performances). Things heat up, however, when a renegade Russian general takes control of a Soviet sub and threatens nuclear war. In no time, Washington and Hackman are at odds with each other over possible retaliation. Fairly authentic and exciting throughout, Crimson Tide is more credible than Scott's other military saga Top Gun, though Michael Schiffer's soldierly screenplay did get some help from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne.
