This Russian version of Dostoyevsky's literary classic about a student who murders a pawnbroker and her daughter is an authentic and brilliant translation of the much-filmed novel. The impoverished Raskolnikov, racked by guilt for his crimes, is eventually hunted by Police Inspector Porfiry and confesses. Much longer than the U.S., English and French versions, the film probes the intense mental anguish of Raskolnikov and provides a haunting image of the man's tortured soul. (Russian with English subtitles)
