On the heels of Louis Malle's Vanya on 42nd Street comes another, delectable interpretation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya." Concentrating more on the comedy of culture clash and romantic escapades than the drama of emotional chasms and interpersonal relationships, this sometimes giddy concoction is set on a sheep ranch in post-WWII Australia. A sweetly romantic Neill stars as Dr. Askey, an idealistic boozer who falls in love with Deborah (Scacchi), the young wife of the estate's owner (director Blakemore is a smashing performance) who has returned after a long absence. Unrequited love, social upheaval and regret are themes still present, though this comedy of manners treads softly. Not every scene of this liberal translation reaches its potential, but as an immensely appealing ensemble proves, Country Life has its merits.
