Review

Harold Pinter made his directorial debut with this American Film Theatre production of the play by Simon Gray. Alan Bates is splendid as an acerbic, self-destructive professor who drives away both his long-suffering wife and his younger male lover with his bitter verbal assaults. Brimming with caustic wit, such as "I'm a one woman man, and I've had mine, thank God," the play provides a perfect vehicle for the energetic Bates who originated the role on both the London and New York stage.
