Review

Affleck plays a hotshot ad executive who gives a plane ticket to a pleasant writer (Goldwyn) who wants to see his wife (Paltrow). Not out of pity, mind you, but so he can woo a hot babe (Henstridge, playing to type) at the bar. The plane then goes down, and while Death doesn't chase Affleck Final Destination style, the bottle and guilt do. A year later, he tracks down Paltrow, to see how she's doing. But while not revealing himself as the guy who kinda killed her husband, he falls in love with her. An unlikely plot to be sure, but writer-director Roos (The Opposite of Sex) takes the trappings and creates a truly winning romance between an unsavory (but with room for improvement) man and an ideal (but hurting) woman. The two leads deal with their deep and conflicting emotions in a most human way, with pain and humor organically bursting from the situation. Real-life exes Affleck and Paltrow bring whatever they learned from their relationship to the screen and the film is better for it.
