Review

Bristling with a vibrant rhythm that sets it apart from the pack, writer-director Younger's compelling Boiler Room has a take-no-prisoners attitude in telling its story of innocence lost, shady dealings and eventual redemption. Ribisi gives a super-charged performance as Seth, a naïve young man looking to make his mark as a stock broker. Things spiral out of control when he joins a company involved in illegal tradings. Caught in a crisis of conscience, Seth is torn between easy money and doing the right thing. His decision and the film's outcome isn't as predictable -- nor as black and white -- as you'd think. Ribisi is terrific as the young go-getter, a Duddy Kravitz for the millennium. His scenes with his father (expertly played by Rifkin) are masterful, creating a sublime dichotomy between Seth's two equally important worlds -- family and business. Seth briefly enjoys the sweet smell of success, but the cost is high in this uncompromising, whirlwind look at ambition and corruption. Diesel is especially good in support as a rival broker.
