An intriguing character piece, the inappropriately titled Beyond Suspicion features two compelling performances by Goldblum and Heche, each making this low-keyed but effective drama probably more involving than it has any right to be. Goldblum plays John, a hot-shot insurance salesman whose life drastically changes when he witnesses the murder of a store clerk during a robbery. As he becomes obsessed to learn all he can about the dead man, Auggie Rose, John soon assumes Auggie's identity, including living in the ex-con's apartment and beginning a relationship with Auggie's pen pal Lucy (Heche), who were to meet for the first time. Writer-director Tabak gives his film a nice, easy-going tempo, one in which the actors can take their time discovering their characters, and where events unfold unhurriedly and steadfast.
