Christie, playing opposite the immensely talented Gordon Pinsent, is Fiona, a woman who holds a grudge against her husband Grant for his decades of promiscuity. Despite their rough days, Grant and Fiona are lovingly and quietly living out their days together in the rural Canadian countryside, comfortably settled in their familiar habits. But when Fiona begins to show signs of her memory fading, she knows the end of her time is near. Much to the distaste of the guilt-ridden and overly devoted Grant, she checks into a resting home. But when the new residence’s policy demands that they not communicate for the first month of her occupancy, things begin to worsen in their ailing relationship, and Grant is forced to make a painful choice for the sake of his wife’s well-being. Polley, a seasoned actress in her own right, draws top-notch performance from her actors in this beautifully tragic story. Already destined for the 2008 Oscar race, Away From Her is a tiny epic of love, devotion and last wishes. But be prepared — by the end of the night there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
