Byrne stars as an ex-con and cartoonist who discovers that his cartoon creations have a life of their own in a parallel universe known as Cool World. Director Bakshi follows the Roger Rabbit lead and combines live-action actors with his visually wild animation. On a technical level, the film is fascinating; Bakshi's trademark dark and leering imagery is as hip as ever. But the film is curiously unsatisfying -- the story is muddled and the action unfocused. Byrne and costar Pitt are competent in their roles, but Basinger is sadly out-gunned by her cartoon alter ego.
