Collette stars as an ambitious temp worker who gets a job at a credit agency. She immediately befriends three other temps there -- aspiring actress Kudrow, about to be married Ubach, and the eternally snappy, bitchy, energetic Posey. The surprisingly close quartet soon have their friendships and loyalties tested when they are suspected in a rash of thefts. Anyone who's ever worked as a temp will instantly recognize many dead-on details and situations, and the atmosphere captured by director Spencer is totally accurate. The first half of Clockwatchers is an extremely funny, lightly satiric view of office politics (Posey has all the best moments here). But when the plot mechanics start to grind, the picture becomes too self-serious, its light touch lost for good.
