Wahlberg sparkles in this immensely enjoyable and decidedly over-the-top trip through the '70s as seen through the filter of the adult film industry. Wahlberg is Eddie Adams, an unassuming busboy at a seedy L.A. discotheque where he is approached by XXX-porn director Jack Horner (Reynolds, in a role that should have won him an Oscar). Within weeks our winsome hero is transformed from hayseed Valley Boy into the latest 100%-grade AAA beef packin' superstar of smut...Dirk Diggler! Director Anderson (Hard Eight) does a masterful job of piecing together this cinematic expedition from the giddy innocence of the early '70s to the paranoiac, cocaine-addled violence at the beginning of the Reagan era. Moore is stunning as Reynolds' porn-star wife Amber Waves, the veteran starlet who helps initiate Dirk into the tight-knit family that live and parties in and around their Valley bungalow. Includes 20 minutes of censored scenes not shown theatrically.
