Review

Chistopher Guest's (Waiting for Guffmann) new film is a complete hoot. If you have ever laughed at (or even loved) watching a dog show on TV, this film is a must. From the lesbian dog handler to the fussy queens with their shitzu, Guest has the whole thing down pat. Guest plays a southern bachelor who owns a blood hound, while co-writer Eugene Levy has a terrier and geniunely has two left feet! The most riotous portrayals are Meg and Hamilton Swan (Posey and Hitchcock) as overly neurotic owners of a Weimeraner who compare brand names constantly and fret over a missing toy. Also amazing are Scott Donlan and Stefan Vanderhoof (Higgins and McKean) as fussy queens with their shih tzu. They travel with their crazy quilt to hang over the bed and special silk pillows! But Jane Lynch as the dyke handler of the Cabot's Standard Poodle is fabulous. The film was improvised by the actors and the dialogue has a truly natural feel, a credit to the genius of Guest and his ensemble cast. At the end of Waiting for Guffman we were given the treat of the My Dinner With Andre live action figures, here it's a new magazine, American Bitch, the magazine for the lesbian show dog owner!
