From the writer-director of Pitch Black, this sleeper should please fans of both suggestive, creepy ghost stories and WWII submarine films. A U.S. sub picks up the only three survivors of a British hospital ship that had been torpedoed by a German U-boat. When unexplained phenomena begin occurring on the sub at an alarming rate, more than a few of the crew begin to suspect they've also picked up something supernatural as well. A well-told "revenge from beyond the grave" tale is enhanced greatly by the unique (for a horror film) setting: the cold, watery, claustrophobic confines of a submarine. It all makes for an inspired variation on the haunted house genre. A deliberately paced, highly atmospheric chiller, Below is a cut above.
