Review

Kilmer replaces Michael Keaton in the title role and breathes some depth of character into a role made far too enigmatic by his predecessor. As in the previous two episodes, the plot is mostly incidental filler (wacko badguys have it out for Batman...again!) that sets up outrageous pyrotechnical action sequences. But hey, the name of the game here is Gothic atmosphere, special effects and action, action and more action; and in this arena Batman Forever does not disappoint. O'Donnell is a circus performer who, finding himself orphaned and hellbent for vengeance, transforms himself into Robin. As for the villains, Carrey offers a spectacularly rubber-faced and over-the-top interpretation of The Riddler which overshadows Jones' Two-Face. Kidman has a throwaway role as a criminal psychologist who tries to probe the depths of Bruce Wayne's psyche -- as well as some parts of his anatomy.
