Armistead Maupin
Armistead Maupin grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and after graduating from the University of North Carolina. Maupin served in the Navy and with the River Patrol force in Vietnam. After a short stint at a newspaper in Charleston, South Carolina he was assigned to the Associated Press in San Francisco. While here, Maupin created some of gay literature's most beloved characters in his Tales of the City series. What started as a serial in The Pacific Sun, a local newspaper in San Francisco, went on to become one of our favorite novel series and television miniseries starring Olympia Dukakis as Anna the matriarchal transsexual and Laura Linney as every gay man's best friend.
Maupin's work has also hit the big screen in the film adaptation of The Night Listener starring Robin Williams in 2006. In 2011 a Tales of the City musical will be making its debut in San Francisco, and hopefully traveling across the country to Broadway.
