Review

A popular ex-husband-and-wife acting team reunite to publicize their last film together -- but if their movie is a stifling as this romantic comedy, no amount of goodwill will save it. Cusack and Zeta-Jones are Eddie Thomas and Gwen Harrison, America's Sweethearts. They split more than a year ago, but have one final film together ready for release. It's up to agent Lee Phillips (Crystal) to bring them together for the film's press junket, with a little help from Gwen's sister/secretary Kiki (Roberts). Crystal must bear the brunt of much of this, for as cowriter and producer he's settled to use the cast's well-known screen images to suffice for characterization, rather than give them anything particularly amusing or romantic to do. Sure there are a few funny moments, and who can't resist backstage back-stabbings? But with uninspired direction, Roth has also seen to it there's no heart to the romance, little humor to the comedy, and plenty of clichés.
